Land and Water Use

There are about 220 tillable acres at the Sand Plain Research Farm.  Of that, we conduct research trials on about 60 acres, and have production and/or rotation crops on approximately 150 acres.  The station has the unique ability to conduct dryland and irrigation comparison studies because of the soil's low water holding capacity.  We utilize four wells for irrigation, which pumps on average 1,200 gallons per minute.

In any given year, our plot crops can change depending on current research projects with colloaborating scientists and faculty.  The chart below illustrates what a typical plot season may look like for us here at Sand Plain.
