Results allow producers across Minnesota to compare yields and make informed decisions about their variety selections for the next growing season.
MINNEAPOLIS/St. PAUL (09/11/2024) – Preliminary yield results from the 2024 variety trials are now available at varietytrials.umn.edu for the following crops: spring wheat, winter wheat, winter rye, winter triticale, barley, and oats. The annual report including all crops and finalized data will be published later this year.
According to Jochum Wiersma, Small Grains Specialist and Extension professor at the Northwest Research and Outreach Center (NWROC) in Crookston, this year's small grains trials had great yields across the state but saw increased disease presence. "Our trials faced more disease pressure from Fusarium head blight (scab) and leaf, stem, and stripe rust which caused significant yield losses for individual varieties. This information will be helpful for small grain producers as they make their variety selections for the next growing season.”
Disease pressure is a commonality across the state this year, as described by UMN Extension in the August 21st small grain harvest update. They also report that farmers are pulling in greater yields than anticipated.
The variety trials include multiple crops that are grown at several Research and Outreach Centers and cooperating farmers’ fields across the state. Check out the data tables on the variety trial website to find a trial location near you.
